7 Secrets That Helped Rebel Wilson Lose Weight Faster
The actress and comedian open out about her struggles with emotional eating and how to deal with “haters.”
Although Rebel Wilson’s “Year of Health” officially ended on December 31, 2020, it appears that she’s ready to go plural…now she’s going on Year #3 in her “Years of Health.”

The actress, who mentions briefly that she graduated from law school in 2009, then went on to star in the film Pitch Perfect as “Fat Amy,” one of her most well-known characters. According to the actress and comedian on Instagram, her girth was part of her “comedic persona,” and she had been on a weight roller coaster since she was about 20; dropping a few pounds, then gaining them back.
1. Accept imperfection as a part of life.
Wilson hasn’t been picky about what he eats or how hard he works out. Instead, she wants to “fight health from every angle” and offer herself grace if she misses a day or eats something that doesn’t fit into her Mayr Method eating plan.
2. Write down why you’re doing what you’re doing.
Wilson’s “why” was to become in shape before freezing her eggs in the hopes of having children later. (Wilson was diagnosed with the polycystic ovarian syndrome in her twenties.) It was also to make herself feel better and overcome her emotional eating while remaining true to herself.
3. Be truthful to yourself.
Wilson drafted a letter to herself at the start of 2020 to make her commitment to her health feel more concrete. (By the way, we have some helpful tips for setting realistic weight-loss goals!)
4. Determine your preferred method of exercise.
Walking provides her with most of her exercise. Wilson states in the Live, “That is free, it is safe.” She’ll listen to a podcast or read a book while walking around wherever she is. Wilson aims to exercise for 60 minutes six out of seven days a week (walking or working with one of her personal trainers). One day a week is set out for rest. Wilson has also taken to Instagram to show off how she works her arms while on the road by using a vodka bottle!
Wilson tells Women’s Health that now that she’s reached her goal weight, she’s sticking to mostly walks and treating her muscles properly in between by soaking in her bath with Epsom salt or bath oil.

5. Get your nutrition dialed in.
“You can’t out-train a lousy diet,” Wilson said, “which is something I should have known but didn’t until this year.” She used to consume fast food many times a week as a kid, or she’d believe that a rigorous workout gave her permission to eat 3,000 or 4,000 calories on that particular day. Wilson’s goal during the “Year of Health” was to stay under 1,500 calories per day while losing weight, but now that she’s in maintenance mode, she’s increased to 2,000 to 2,500 calories per day. Wilson learned that a high-protein diet makes her feel the best after some trial and error. She doesn’t “eat clean” every day, but she focuses on how her body feels after she eats, and she tries to eat everything mindfully.
Wilson tells Women’s Health that now that she’s not attempting to lose any more pounds, she’s adding additional snacks to her meal, as well as the occasional ice cream and chocolate, to make it more “maintainable.” She’s also using more nutritious components in her favorite dishes, such as shredded carrots and avocados in her tacos.
“The most important thing I’ve learned is how to deal with emotional eating, learning to analyze and deal with my feelings better,” she tells Women’s Health. “That’s what’s made a significant difference in my life.”
6. Be kind to yourself.
“I’m a really confident, skilled, accomplished person,” she says on Live, “yet I still suffer from low self-worth and just don’t love myself,” Wilson stated that purging emotional writing was quite beneficial. She starts by setting a 12-minute timer, then writes down all of her feelings so they don’t stay hidden within her head—and then finishes with one to five things she’s glad for that day.
During her reflections, she recognized that the number on the scale has no bearing on the situation. Wilson tells the BBC, “I’m glad that I was able to convey the message that it wasn’t just about losing weight; it was also about improving my general health. That’s what I’m trying to instill in other people…that should be the objective, not to conform to whatever beauty standard society judges to be the beauty standard of the year.”
7. Give meditation a shot.
Wilson says in the Live that when she’s stressed, she opens a meditation app (here are five we like here at EatingWell!) to “come back into her body.”
