- Prospective scholars must be on track to graduate high school in the spring
- Prospective scholars must be on track with applying to the University of North Carolina at Chapel hill.
- Prospective scholars should either be picked by their high school or an affiliate program or apply for the Morehead Cain scholarship directly.
- Morehead Cain scholarship awards are based on the students’ accomplishments and potential in its core values namely; academic excellence, leadership, character and physical vigor.

- Applicants to the Morehead Cain scholarship are allowed to apply early decision(ED) to other colleges and universities which they are interested in. However, morehead cain requires applicants to inform them as soon as possible if they are accepted to another college or university through early decision and if they are not, they should also inform the morehead cain scholarship if they are still interested in the scholarship.
